I find it interesting that the crazy guy from the crazy band (Cale) produced the more pop oriented eponymous LP while the guy from the band that made “Louie, Louie” famous (Gallucci) produced the crazy LP. He does fair lip service to Velvet Undergrounder, John Cale, but fails to mention that Funhouse producer, Don Gallucci, was the pianist for The Kingsmen (and Don & The Goodtimes and Touch) before becoming a producer for Elektra Records. I feel that Callwood missed a fine opportunity to explore the recording of the first two Stooges records by examining the people who produced them. Actually, I think it’s safe to say there should have been more about those three. Well, what were they like as children? What did they do together? How did they get along? What was their home life like? What was their favorite game? There could have been so much more about the brothers as well as Dave Alexander. This book purports to focus on Ron and Scott Asheton. In my humble opinion, objectivity is key when writing a biography. There is way, way, way too much subjectivity in the way Callwood writes. I found one by a gentleman named David Cheal that closely mirrors my opinion of this bio: I went on line and read some reviews of this book. Deadline? There’s a deadline on this book that may have prevented the inclusion of portions of interviews with the subjects of said book? This is a twofold issue because, on the one hand, not interviewing the subject makes for a rather stunted bio and, on that pesky other hand, what are you doing with a deadline when writing a biography? I’m deadly serious. Your role is to be like a ninja assassin, unheard, unseen and to assassinate us with cold, hard facts.Ĭallwood talks about finally getting interviews with actual Stooges weeks before his deadline.

This is bad because:ġ) Who cares? You’re a biographer. Callwood goes to great lengths to express to you, the reader, how much effort he put into putting this book together. It was while reading the introduction that I got the first inkling that all might not be right. I found this 2008 Stooges bio used for $5 and knew there was no question I would take it home with me. I don’t have, like, Stooges bed sheets and all the bootlegs (who needs ‘em?), but their music sends me.
